British author Rumer Godden described her writing as starting out as a grit, some thing or event in everyday life that lodges in the mind and serves as the starting point or the inspiration for a piece of writing. A purl is one of two basic stitches in knitting and it is a homonym of pearl, a thing of beauty in nature, unique in its makeup that starts out as a grit, a tiny grain of sand inside an oyster. And “yarn” is a synonym for “story”. So, it’s only natural that grits and purls, writing and knitting come together, hopefully to create something truly unique and beautiful. Here, Isobel and I hope to spend some time spinning stories and discovering purls of wisdom in the grits of everyday things and events, learning as we observe life and converse with our readers.

Michele Arduengo is a science and medical writer/editor in Madison, WI. In addition this blog, she blogs for Promega Connections, and her writing is also syndicated in a weekly newspaper column that she writes for The Milton Courier. She holds a B.A. in Biology from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA, and a Ph.D. through the Biochemistry, Cell and Developmental Biology Program at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. Michele is certified by the Board of Editors in the Life Sciences and has been writing and editing in the life science area for over 15 years.
