British author Rumer Godden described her writing as starting out as a grit, some thing or event in everyday life that lodges in the mind and serves as the starting point or the inspiration for a piece of writing. A purl is one of two basic stitches in knitting and it is a homonym of pearl, a thing of beauty in nature, unique in its makeup that starts out as a grit, a tiny grain of sand inside an oyster. And “yarn” is a synonym for “story”. So, it’s only natural that grits and purls, writing and knitting come together, hopefully to create something truly unique and beautiful. Here, Isobel and I hope to spend some time spinning stories and discovering purls of wisdom in the grits of everyday things and events, learning as we observe life and converse with our readers.

Hi Michele! I just found your blog through a Google search for the prayer about arms of God enfolding me. (The Haiti post came up first.) It’s a neat coincidence that I just spent time with a friend visiting from near you in the Madison area, and emailing with a friend of mine who is in Haiti now. Seemed like a neat serendipity, so I thought I’d say Hi!
